San Antonio Botanical Garden

Operated under the auspices of the City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department, the San Antonio Botanical Garden founded in 1980, encompasses 33 acres in the center of the city of San Antonio.
Brief History
Prior to 1877, the eastern end of Mahncke Park was a limestone quarry and details of the quarry's operations are unknown. In 1877, J. B. LaCoste and Associates contracted with the City of San Antonio to construct a water works system. LaCoste and Associates sold the water company to G. W. Brackenridge in 1883 who later became convinced that there was danger of complete failure of the San Antonio River as a water supply in the event of a long period of drought. By 1890, city residents became alarmed at the possibility that the river and the open reservoir would become contaminated. As a result, wells supplying pure artesian water began to be used to the exclusion of the surface water supply system and the reservoir was abandoned. In 1899, Brackenridge deeded the water works land and properties to the City.
Mrs. R. R. Witt and Mrs. Joseph Murphy conceived the idea of a Botanical Garden in San Antonio in the 1940’s. Together with their friends and associates, they organized the San Antonio Garden Center. Their first major effort was the development and presentation of a master plan for a public botanical garden in the late 1960’s. The recommended garden site became the former Brackenridge waterworks land which was being held by the city.
Funding for ground work began in 1970, when voters approved $265,000 in bonds for the Garden. This money, along with a grant awarded five years later by the Ewing Halsell Foundation, other contributions from organizations…

	Tell-a-friend San Antonio Opera The opera orchestra consists of 48-58 symphony musicians, mostly performers of the SA Symphony, and a semi-professional chorus made up of 44 local vocalists. Each season consists of 3 major operas which perform to over 14,000 patrons annually. The opera's educational program continues to grow and is expected to reach 30,000 children in 2009-2010. During the past 12 seasons, the opera has produced 47 major operas and concerts starring some of the world's greatest opera and music stars including Placido Domingo, Andrea Bocelli, Frederica von Stade and Roberta Peters.
	Tell-a-friend San Antonio Children's Museum The San Antonio Children's Museum was founded by a group of dedicated volunteers who were committed to building a community space dedicated to early childhood development. Since opening its doors in September of 1995, more than two million visitors have explored three floors of hands-on exhibits that spark children's imagination and help them discover a world of knowledge. Dedicated to children ages 0-10 years, the museum's exhibits and programs are focused on early childhood learning, especially in the creative arts, sciences and early literacy. 	Tell-a-friend San Antonio Zoo Ranked as one of the best zoos in the nation exhibiting over 3,500 animals of 750 species. At the headwaters of the San Antonio River, the zoo encompasses 35 landscaped acres. Includes one of the largest bird collections in the world. 	Tell-a-friend San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet Our mission is to provide a cultural and educational platform through dance, promoting and encouraging local talent to demonstrate their artistic abilities through performance opportunities while heightening community awareness and involvement in the arts. San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet holds weekly company classes on Saturdays with rehearsals on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from late August through late April at Connally's Dance Workshop, Inc. SA Met produces two performances per season - one fall storybook ballet and one mixed repertory performance in the spring.
